网瘾战争 - War of Internet Addiction - Party 1 of 7 (World of Warcraft) - YouTube
Finally got round to watching
War of Internet Addiction - it's every bit as good as they say, but the translation isn't perfect. It assumes that you know what all of the nerdy WoW references mean (which I don't), but not any of the other pop culture references*. Also, with a lot of stuff it's just like he couldn't be bothered to translate it or something**. Some stuff gets explained in the translators notes, but a guess maybe 50% of the jokes are totally lost. What’s amazing, though, is that it’s still funny, clever and moving. Unlike everything ever produced by CCTV.
Also, you really need to know
the ins and outs of the Blizzard vs. The9 vs. Netease saga and
the Yang Yongxin affair. I didn't really bother following this, so I had to stop halfway through and read up on the details.
Anyway, even if you don’t watch the rest, you should watch part 6 of 7 (
网瘾战争 - War of Internet Addiction - Party 6 of 7 (World of Warcraft) - YouTube), which is the bit that made everyone cry.
*In jail Kan complains that he's about to be
duomaomao-
ed. When he's being ravished by the ninja girl he yells "
yamete". WoW is repeatedly described as a tea table (ie. covered with
cups) etc. etc. I missed loads. Okay, some are hard to translate, but it's not impossible. A large proportion of Anglophone nerds would totally get the yamete thing, for a start.
** When Ding Lei gets stopped by the cops at the beginning, they actually say "We have conclusive proof that you were running an illegal taxi service, and we got it in a totally non illegal way!"
