Default the principle of the thing

we've received a proposal for the following new sub-forum:

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ______________________________

This is where to discuss matters of morality, ethics and rights, whether arising from personal experience, news events, social or technological trends.

Interesting problems arise when the rights of two or more parties clash. Sometimes they may be small, like the right of a Muslim girl to wear a hijab to school. Other times they may be large, like the right of developers to move Londoners who are in the way of the Olympic site. Or even global, like the rights to catch fish in international waters.

Debate and indeed argument are encouraged and might from Aristotle to St Thomas Aquinas to John Stuart Mill to Peter Singer, perhaps even to Gordon Brown. Simple contradiction is not.

.

There are several useful web resource sites:

For more technical reference:

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ______________________________

if the author wants to make him/herself known generally they're more than welcome to, but we've initially assumed their anonymity as an ethical courtesy

so, folks, would you like to see this sub-forum on TNT?

vote here!

While it's true that I'm not at all interested in ethics, I voted for the 3rd option. I think it'd be difficult to have two threads going on simultaneously about an issue with one covering the morality of it and the other doing everything else.

Admittedly, on an intellectual level that'd make way more sense, but I think in practical terms people'd wind up duplicating arguments, or one thread would just die off and everything would happen in the other one.

i think we still have a problem with 'you have already voted in this poll' displaying on the front page, i'll see what i can do about it. in the meantime, it does still let you come through to the thread and vote, and it appears to be tallying the scores correctly.

i voted for yes, but including religion. i think it needs a home somewhere on the boards, and it's not always a hot topic.

Yes, and of course include religion. It purports to answer the questions, and it seems rather arbitrary to rule it out, if that's what is contemplated in option one....

i don't know if it was ruled out so much as just not ruled in. but i'll leave the author to set the record straight on that one if they so choose.

thanks for voting Ben.

second thoughts, religion might rather sully our ethics discussions. like suggesting we include superstition with physics.

I refer you to the 'ghost' thread. Physics and superstition are completely mixable.

Good poll. Everyone, please vote.

Disclosure: I proposed this as a move away from the particular focus that the P&CA board had, to open discussion to wider issues, including ethical issues that members strike in their personal lives and might like to get other opinions about. I am an atheist, but believe that religion is an integral part of humanity. It has lessons for all of us, whether or not we believe in an old man with whiskers living in the sky, and it should be discussed too. So I voted to include that.

Anyway, I have had good opportunity to put a case. I only suggest. NTN members, you decide.
