No disagreement here. It's a soft science, for sure.

Absolutely not. Unscrupulous girls would lie through their teeth to belong to such an exclusive club as that.

LN's response seems the one most consistent with the evolutionary distinction between men and women: men are looking for reproductive fertility whereas women are looking for security to raise a family.

Contra, I think the kind of question you asked would have tapped into the male psyche (sorry, Psyche) if you had posted photos of a girl who was reputed to be like a leopard stretched out along a low-lying tree limb, lazily ready to reach down for anything that took her fancy (not that they are common, at least in this part of the world). There is more to the story than that of course, but I am not going to write a book about it tonight.

Even if the implication is you're the only girl in town Warren Beaty didn't want to sleep with?

Overweight male politicians are more popular - Telegraph

Quote:
Women politicians on the other hand may be wise to hit the treadmill as voters prefer them to be thin.

Voters believed that overweight male candidates were more reliable, honest, dependable and inspiring than their thinner counterparts.

They also thought they would be better able to cope with the stresses and the strains of public office. The direct opposite was true for female politicians, the study found.

The research was carried out in America but is thought to be relevant to all western societies who have similar "stereotypes" about appearance.

"Physical appearance may play a more important role than researchers and candidates have noted," said Dr Elizabeth Miller, a political scientist at the University of Missouri and co-author of the study.

"Potential candidates would be remiss to ignore such stereotypes in contemplating a run for political office."

The study involved splitting a group of 120 volunteers, 75 of whom were female, into two groups and introducing each group to either a fictitious male or female candidate.

The written description of each candidate was the same and provided a brief outline of the "candidate's" political affiliations, views and social background.

The two groups were then split into two further groups who were either given a natural picture of the candidate or a morphed picture of the same person made to look obese.

They were then asked to asses their candidate on a 0 to 100 scale depending on how much they warmed to them. They were also asked to assess them on a number of competence criteria including reliability, dependability, honesty, ability to inspire and ability to perform.

In all cases the obese picture of the man increased his scores but for a woman it decreased it. Overall the obese man was 10 per cent more liked than his thin counterpart.

The study, published in the journal Obesity, concluded that these findings could correspond to societal expectations for women to be thin and men to be large.

The researchers said that the findings may not be so surprising as "there is significant pressure for women in western society to be thin but for men there is pressure to have muscle mass."
"There is significant pressure for women in western society to be thin but for men there is pressure to have muscle mass." Wft? They're writing in a journal called Obesity and they can't even tell the difference between "muscle mass" and acres of rolling blubber.

I prefer Coluche's immortal analysis: "Pour avoir une chance d'être Premier ministre faut être ou un gros qui rassure ou un maigre qui fait peur." (To have a chance of becoming PM you have to be either fat and reassuring or thin and scary.)
