Would anyone be interested in a foreign language forum? I know that several people here are competent in French and Spanish, and there are lots of reports in foreign language papers that merit discussion. Beyond this, it could attract new non-anglophone users, which might be interesting.

We could either have a dedicated "foreign language news" forum to cover all threads based on non-English news reports (comment on them in English would be fine, as writing a second language is harder than reading it), or we could officially welcome foreign language threads into the forums we have currently. Or we could do nothing.

In any case, please vote here, or make your own suggestions.

Edit: euh... there was a supposed to be a poll attached to this... I'm trying to add it now.

As I said before:

Here's the actual poll. Admin, could you delete the other thread or merge them or something?

Yes, i'd be interested in a dedicated "foreign language" forum as long as we get to respond in english

Balls. Is there any way you can fix this for me, Psyche?

I need three options - dedicated forum/foreign stuff in the other forums/no change. Otherwise I'll start a new thread and do it properly.

It would be too distracting if we had the foreign language posts intermixed with the English language posts. Thus, if you want to do it, it should indeed be done in a separate forum.

personally i'm all for, but can we change the emphasis from foreign *language* news to just foreign news? perhaps, in the interests of not dividing the globe up into us and them we could call it world news or something? international affairs?

Would other people just prefer foreign news?

No, I don't think so. We have lots of "foreign" news. In fact, these are the majority of the news. They are everywhere. The problem is that lots of our readers can't read foreign languages, and therefore, untranslated foreign language reports need to be separated into a separate forum.

Yes, i agree with Francois. We do post news from all over the place, with a concentration of US/UK stories, simply because most of us live there.

But RK regularly post stuff about Australia, many discussions about foreign affairs include, well, whichever country we are happening to screw up that week or which is trying to fuck us over (Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia...). Zichao is fond of Chinese/Japanese societal affairs articles...

We even had an article about Berlusconi, iirc but, for example, no one bothered posting anything about him getting hurt. So, ok, it's a bit trivial but it'd be cool to have news from various countries... especially if it meant we get some posters from (realistically) the rest of Europe...
