CNN sure stacked the crowd with some loonies... first you had people cheering at the idea of sending someone in a coma, but with no health insurance, home to die. And then 9-11 came up.

Doesn't seem so loony to me. Just the standard American thingy "We can do no wrong, we are always nice and we'd never hurt a fly... unless you attack us first".

I mean, I remember one interview on 9/11 itself or the day after, with a New York woman crying in the streets and saying "The US always try to help/do good, why would they attack us". She was far too distraught and emotional to be lying - That was just her gut feel talking.

With people like that, any attempt to tell them "erm, it's a bit more complex and we're not exactly the white knight with the shiny armour" is always going to be met with scorn. No one wants to know they're the bad guys...
