Default Senior Tory prepares to admit he is gay

Senior Tory prepares to admit he is gay - Telegraph

Quote:
Nigel Evans, the deputy speaker of the House of Commons, has decided to "come out" in a newspaper interview because he wants to "clear the air".

The sexuality of the MP for Ribble Valley has long been the subject of speculation in Westminster, though he voted against lowering the homosexual age of consent to 18 in 1998.

It follows the announcement by Crispin Blunt, the Conservative justice minister, that he was leaving his wife of 20 years to come to terms with his homosexuality in August.

Mr Evans has never been married and does not have a long-term partner.

His election agent, Michael Ranson, confirmed that he planned to disclose his sexuality in an interview.

"I think there was an understanding that it might happen, that it might declare he was gay. He told me as his agent today.

"He told me that he had been to a newspaper and that he was coming out. I think probably in his position as deputy speaker he wants to clear the air and tell everyone what the situation is.

"I think he just thought it was the right time. He will still be the same person he was yesterday."

A spokesman for Stonewall, the gay rights group, welcomed Mr Evans's decision to disclose his sexuality.

"We are delighted that people in public life now feel open about their sexuality in the way they did not before.

"it is a pleasant surprise that there are now more openly gay Tory MPs than there are in all the other parties put together."

There are 13 openly homosexual Tory MPs, including Mr Evans.
I don't actually care who Evans bones, I'm just interested in why the Tories should have such a high proportion of out gays. Is it the public school thing?

That and the wonderful headline, of course.
