Default Nick Clegg calls on public to help scrap bad laws

I'm a bit dubious on this concept for various reasons, but I'm still going to nominate extreme porn.

Quote:
In an article for The Daily Telegraph, the Deputy Prime Minister says that “people, not policy-makers” are the best judges of which “unnecessary laws” should be repealed.

Your Freedom: suggest the laws you want repealed

The “radically different” approach is part of the Coalition’s attempt to redress the balance between the citizen and the state, Mr Clegg argues. He says it is not for Government to tell people “how to live their lives” and that civil liberties should be restored and laws stifling businesses abandoned.

As part of Mr Clegg’s initiative, Telegraph.co.uk is providing a Your Freedom link to the Cabinet Office website where people can put forward their suggestions for which laws should be targeted.

In his article, Mr Clegg says: “Today we are taking an unprecedented step. Based on the belief that it is people, not policy-makers, who know best, we are asking the people of Britain to tell us how you want to see your freedom restored.

“We are calling for your ideas on how to protect our hard-won liberties and repeal unnecessary laws. And we want to know how best to scale back excessive regulation that denies businesses the space to innovate.

“We’re hoping for virtual mailbags full of suggestions. Every single one will be read, with the best put to Parliament.

“It is a radically different approach. One based on trust. Because it isn’t up to government to tell people how to live their lives.”

David Cameron and Mr Clegg are committed through their Coalition agreement to roll back the state and expunge some of the “intrusive and unnecessary” laws brought in by Labour.

The Deputy Prime Minister asks people to concentrate on three areas:

Laws that have eroded civil liberties.
Regulations that stifle the way charities and businesses work.
Laws that are not required and which are likely to see law-abiding citizens criminalised.
Once the ideas have been logged through the website, users will be able to comment and rate those which they believe should be considered by the Government.

Whitehall departments and ministers will be able to post their responses to suggestions.

Once sifted, assessments will be made on which laws should be repealed. They will then be included in a new Freedom Bill, which will be unveiled in the autumn. In his article, Mr Clegg adds that the Labour government developed “a dangerous reflex” when faced with a problem and just passed more laws.

“Over the last decade, thousands of new rules and regulations have amassed on the statute book. And it is our liberty that has paid the price. Under the cover of pretending to act in our best interest, the state has crept further and further into people’s homes and their private lives. That intrusion is disempowering. It needs to change.”

Telegraph.co.uk readers are now able to submit their suggestions for laws which should be scrapped.

Among the rules likely to be targeted is that allowing the fingerprinting of children without parental consent. There will undoubtedly also be calls to repeal the Human Rights Act. However, Mr Cameron has already appeared to rule out any changes to this despite indicating in the election that he was ready to do so.

There are also likely to be lobbying campaigns to repeal bans on hunting. But such highly contested laws are unlikely to be included in Mr Clegg’s final list which he will include in what is being called the latest Great Reform Act.

Health and safety laws will also be the focus of attention.

The website's slow as fuck. Here's extreme porn: Repeal Section 63 of the CJIA 2008 ("extreme porn") — HMG - Your Freedom. I'll try to do one for anime porn too.

I wrote up my anime porn thing, but the site got overloaded and went down before I could upload it (and it doesn't permit you to export stuff and save it - the interface is horrible). I'll try again later.

So they are not all that keen on the public giving its opinion, are they?
