And some of my friends who were born on ski slopes can actually run with their ski shoes. Run! Nonetheless they still drop them for after-ski boots when it's time to hit the chalet bar...
Same argument as with weapons of war. I've been caught in quite a few discussions about the spear/pike/halbard vs. sword debate. Some saying that, if you have a basic knowledge of how to use it, a spear dominates a sword. Be that as it may, people didn't go to the pub or move around with a spear or lance - But they did move around with a one handed or bastard sword.
Part of it was down to legislation, obviously. But part of it was just practicality.
Just as, today, if you were caught in a gunfight on a night out on the town, you might wish for an automatic rifle. But, in reality, you'd only carry a pistol because automatic rifles are both prohibited and a pain in the neck to slug around...
