DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Synthetic recreational drugs known as "bath salts" are drawing increasing concern from state and local officials who say the legal substances have been linked to deaths and crimes in Ohio.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the drugs have led to at least three deaths in southwest Ohio. They've also been tied to at least one death in northeast Ohio. The coroner's office in Cincinnati says the substances have been linked to criminal cases there.

Bath salts are crystalized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed or smoked. They can cause paranoia, and have led to hundreds of calls to poison centers nationwide.

An Ohio lawmaker wants to make it illegal to sell some chemicals found in bath salts. The American Medical Association is also supporting national legislation to ban the drugs.
