Police: Nurse tried to kill ill husband by cutting off oxygen, overdosing him | WHAS11.com Louisville
(WHAS11) - Police say a Kentuckiana nurse tried to kill her bed ridden husband by cutting off his oxygen and overdosing him on morphine.
Louisville nurse Diane Simpson headed off to the Clark County Jail Monday. She’s charged with neglecting a dependent and unlawful practice of medicine for what she allegedly did to her husband in their Clarksville, Indiana home.
“I think she was doing her best to kill him,” said Teresa McMurry, Ron Simpson’s daughter. Ron Simpson has emphysema, diabetes, COPD and is legally blind. Police say his wife Diane Simpson, who is a nurse at Jefferson Place nursing home in Louisville, was caring for him up until last fall.
“The facts of this are highly unusual. That we would have a wife who is caring for her husband and as a result of that substandard care he almost died. So, um, we don’t see cases like this very often,” said Jeremy Mull, Clark County Deputy Prosecutor.
A warrant was filed for Diane Simpson and she turned herself into police. The criminal complaint says Diane Simpson withheld medicine, overdosed Ron Simpson on morphine and cut off his oxygen.
“I think she got tired of taking care of him. She works at Jefferson Place nursing home and I think she took care of people and I think she got tired of taking care of him at home,” said McMurry. “We are very disappointed they are not going for attempted murder.”
Prosecutors say right now they don’t have the evidence to support that charge. Diane Simpson’s attorney says she’ll have her day in court.
“We are still waiting for information from the prosecutor’s office as to what the substance of those allegations are and we’re confident that once all that information comes to light that Ms. Simpson will be acquitted.” said John Grannan, Diane Simpson’s attorney.
We talked to the administrator of Jefferson Place nursing home, where Simpson is a nurse, and she would only say the allegations against Simpson were being handled appropriately.
