Meh. There is a difference between the socially awkward types and others who share the interests that the socially awkward types gravitate towards. Fiddling with computers in the 80's was pretty nerdy, doing so in 2000's wasn't. The more interesting part is that the perception, largely media based, that people with computers are nerdy or geeky is just some sort of memetic throwback. By contrast, fiddling around with the mechanics of cars was never regarded as geeky, even though it was just as technical and anti-social. The predecessors of computer nerds were those who stripped their own carburettors and then those who built their own hi-fi's.
