It's a bit hard to think that Stone Age medicine was superior to Bronze Age, Greco-Roman and even medieval medicine.
Medieval Islam medecine as well as the Incas/Aztec one was supposed to kick ass. They still had staggering attrition rates.
And most of it occurs during the first 5 years... So they did not need to sustain it for too long. And, when they couldn't, due to famine, say (i.e. changes in the economic environment) they simply died of hunger and no one was finding it exceptionally shocking.
