Default Air steward storms off plane on emergency slide

Quote:
Steven Slater, 39, argued with a passenger in America who was attempting to retrieve his hand luggage from an overhead compartment while the plane from Pittsburgh to New York was still moving on the runway.

When the passenger abused Mr Slater, the "runaway" flight attendant appears to have lost his temper and dramatically resigned.

He grabbed the intercom and said: "To the passenger who called me a mother ------, ---- you.

"I've been in the business 28 years. I've had it. That's it."

Mr Slater then activated the emergency exit and slid down the inflatable slide on to the tarmac.

He then boarded a train to the terminal, stripping off his tie and discarding it to the astonishment of bemused onlookers.

He then drove to his nearby home. He was quickly arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

Mr Slater is a long-standing flight attendant who worked for budget airline Jet Blue.

According to his online profile, he has previously worked for other airlines.

His arrest appears to have triggered an online movement, with others who work in jobs which bring them in to contact with rude customers demanding his release.

If your justice system sends people to jail for things like this then I suspect that your society's taking itself way too seriously. If I were the judge I'd censure the public prosecutor for wasting the court's time on trivialities.

Before doing that, I would want to consult with an industry expert (or several) as to the reality of the endangeriment. If it turns out it's real, I disagree with you.

Criminal mischief or something like that. The aircraft had to have that slide restored to stowed and ready condition before it could take off. The airline probably had to take everyone off and reschedule them. The costs of all this would have been significant.

Plus the fellow's actions immobilized the aircraft for a time on the taxiway, or possibly at the end of the runway of an operating airport, as they certainly wouldn't move the aircraft until the door was secured. There was a danger to that, I'd say, esp if the latter case applied. Also there would be a danger of someone falling out that door until it was secured, and a danger to crew members securing it. And, if the slide was jettisoned when the door was secured, it would become a danger to other aircraft, as would be any smaller foreign objects emitted due to the slide deployment.

Not that I'm an expert.

Yeah, a fine would be OKay with me, conceptually. OTOH, if his antics have cost companies a few $mil, it's not like he's ever going to be able to repay. Thus, we need to find another to punish him...

They'll be insured, and it's not (shouldn't be) the costs involved that decide whether a case is civil or criminal.

Well, if I miss my plane because of his "beau geste", I will want him to suffer. It seems to me it's the courts' duties to mediate that. Since he cannot pay every passanger for the problems caused, I am still wondering what kind of punishment would be adequate.

Besides, you'd be the first one to agree that criminal court would be adapted if someone had died as a consequence of his actions, no?

You claim compensation from your insurance company, which claims it from the airline, which includes it in its own court case against the guy as well as in its own insurance demand.

But they didn't, and he couldn't reasonably expect that anyone would.
