i've taken up the NationalNovelWritingMonth challenge to write 50,000 words in a month.

yes, i've signed away my november and will be spending the long dark nights scribbling in solitude. but by december, i'll have written a book

anyone else fancy being a novelist?

no?

imagine how many more uncomfortable cocktail party pauses you have left to experience in your life. now mentally fill those future gaps with witty, oblique references to the book wot you wrote... see the reverence and awe fill your future acquaintance's face...

isn't that better?

come on, you know you want to...

Quote:
NoNoWriMo

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

In 2008, we had over 119,000 participants. More than 21,000 of them crossed the 50k finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.

So, to recap:

What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

Still confused? Just visit the How NaNoWriMo Works page!

I just hit 50,000 words with my Breton story, and I'm not happy with it at all. I'm so unmotivated that I probably won't try to re-write, I'll just chuck the lot.

Tell you what - if you post a chapter every three or four days I will too. I should have done something like that from the start - it'd have provided some pressure to get it right first time rather than back-and-fill. I might inflict it on you even if no one else joins in...

Mine won't count for the official thing obviously - actually, it's a pity that I've got this one on the go as I've got two others waiting and a month's deadline is just what I need. Bad timing.

ok

mine will be utter gobbledegook though, you know that right? worse, it'll probably be pretentious, clumsy, self regarding, overwritten gobbledegook. but hopefully there'll be lots of it.

deal?

You're on - it can't possibly be worse than mine - it's all bitty and incoherent and makes no sense with hindsight.

You're nuts.

No way I am writing 50,000 words in a month. That's 1,700 words a day. 140 words per waking hours (12, that is).

I don't have the imagination anyhow.

i know... i just plotted them all out on the calendar and freaked out a little bit.

considering i've been suffering from the worst writers block in history for oh, thirty years or so, expecting verbal diarrhoea to strike at the stroke of midnight on nov 1st seems a little... hopeful.

but hey, i'm hoping this competition will be the literary equivalent of ex-lax.

They're rarely meant as book-length, though. If anything, my best RP adventures tend to be scenarii stolen from books or movies, so it'd be plagiating a book/movie that already exist...

But, mostly, I'd have the whole thing done in 5,000 words and have no clue where to find the other 45,000...
