yes, basically. which may or may not have anything to do with my enjoyment...

right at the beginning of the series an earnest young friend who had read the books was proclaiming them as a feminist lord of the rings. i protested that so far a) the girls were mostly not wearing very much and b) that all the powerful female characters were serving as counterweights to male leads. she insisted that it was just early days and a set up for the eventual across the board female triumph. so i'm looking forward to the second series.

Funny how perceptions vary. Which female characters are naked all the time in GoT? Half are underaged, children, to start with.

There was a lot more skin in the first series than appeared in the books. Notably the the seen with Littlefinger coaching his girls no how to get a good lez on, that was new. Daenerys was rather more naked than she was in the books.

I do think that whatshername, the Lannister villainess, is a strong character, Daenerys certainly has places to go - not giving too much away - and Arya of course is partly sympathetic and partly tough. it will be interesting to see how they do Brienne of Tarth, and who they cast for the role.

Considering the genre, this is a pretty good mix of powerful female characters, better at least than the damsels in distress being dragged around by the likes of Indiana Jones, frex.

Sow the first episode of Spartacus; wasn't too impressed, and nudity seems to have become part of the stock elements of the reinvigorated sword & sandal genre, and historical stuff in general, following on from Rome. I'd be more impressed if it was more even, it does feel rather like fanservice.

I'll give you the whores stuff. But, otoh, the series (at least book 2 onward) tend to mention rapes in passing quite a bit. We haven't seen any of that. And I somehow suspect we're not going to.

I agree that "Rome" led to a watershed moment for historical, esp. antique, movies. OTOH, I am not entirely against it as - quite apart from the titillating aspects - it matches the mores of the time.

I am not sure I'd accept the Daenarys case. Or, if she shows more skin than expected, then, so must Khal Drogo. So women ought to be pretty happy too...
