WHAS11) – WHAS11 has learned of a warning from the Metro Health Department about an outbreak of a contagious disease.
There have been 65 confirmed cases of shigellosis in the last three months. The average is 62 cases per year. Half the new cases are in kids aged three-years-old and under.
The health department says shigellosis is highly contagious. It is spread by bacteria on the hands which is then transferred to the mouth.
The best way to keep from getting sick is just by washing your hands. Symptoms of shigellosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, high fever, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
