Default Army confines 100 soldiers to base over missing equipment

I bet that sucks ass. May not have even been soldiers as many contractors as the bases hire.

Army confines 100 soldiers to base over missing equipment - Yahoo! News

Reuters) - About 100 U.S. Army soldiers are confined to a Washington state base after authorities discovered that optics equipment is missing, a base spokesman said on Sunday.

The infantry unit at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was placed on lockdown Wednesday after the equipment was discovered missing from a supply area, said Major Chris Ophardt, a spokesman for the U.S. Army's I Corps at the base. The equipment included weapon sights and targeting lasers.

"There are many items missing," Ophardt said, adding that the equipment was "definitely stolen." He said no weapons are missing, and there is no danger to the public.

The base is located about nine miles south of Tacoma.

Lockdown means the soldiers are confined to the barracks and office areas of the unit, so they can't go home if they have families outside of barracks. On Saturday, lockdown was changed to restriction, which means the soldiers' families can visit them, Ophardt said.

A criminal investigation has been launched, and a $10,000 reward offered.

The unit has been home from Iraq since September 2010.

Robert Mason, in his excelent Vietnam war book Chickenhawk, mentioned an ocassion in which a Huey went missing, presumed lost. The guy handling logistics for the unit was barraged by requests from other quartermasters to report that their missing stuff was on the lost chopper so that it would be written off; they figured by the end that the theoretical lost machine was so overloaded that it couldn't have lifted itself into the air.

In France its the legionnaires who are reknowned for their sticky fingers. My favourite story involved two Jeeps going missing on a PKO in Africa somewhere. The officers were just standing around scratching their heads, wondering where they'd got to, when they heard a mysterious banging noise coming from behind the barracks. Upon investigation they found a legionnaire busily removing the serial numbers from two Jeeps that he'd "just bought". Apparently it's not rare to take the tarps off vehicles that are shipped back home and find them up on bricks.
