Default Children in Need raises record £26 million

Quote:
The figure was announced at the end of the six-hour charity marathon at 2am.

Host Sir Terry Wogan said: "That is the greatest single total we have ever made in one night, so thank you.

"Thank you to the British people in these tough times to come up with that kind of money on behalf of Britain's children."

It will now be hoped that the appeal can top the record for the final total, which was set at £40 million in 2010.

The BBC One show featured a wide range of stars, with JLS, Lord Sugar, fashion guru Gok Wan, the cast of The Wizard of Oz and four BBC newsreaders among those providing entertainment.

Boyband One Direction kicked the event off with their single What Makes You Beautiful.

Sir Terry's co-hosts Tess Daly, Alesha Dixon and Fearne Cotton were all dressed in gold and posed like Charlie's Angels as Destiny's Child's song Independent Women blasted through the studio.

Earlier in the evening, Matt Baker arrived at the BBC studios after cycling a rickshaw from Edinburgh to London.

He arrived at The One Show studio shortly before 7.10pm and hugged co-host Alex Jones, expressing his relief at having completed the challenge.

The presenter raised £1,263,272 during a journey which lasted eight days and covered a total of 484 miles.

Four BBC newsreaders got into the spirit of things by swapping the newsdesk for the dancefloor as they took part in a Strictly Come Dancing performance with the show's professional dancers.

Sian Williams, Sophie Raworth, Emily Maitlis and Susanna Reid donned glamorous outfits for the occasion which were then ripped off in Bucks Fizz-style fashion to reveal glitzy purple dresses, slashed to the thigh and adorned with a red tassel trim.

The broadcasters danced a cha cha cha to Katy Perry's song Firework and participated in an impressive lift with their partners.

Presenter Angela Rippon then joined the four couples on the floor wearing an elegant black dress with the typical Strictly addition of jewels and sequins.

The 67-year-old famously got her legs out as she emerged from behind a desk in a Morecambe And Wise TV special in 1977.

Reid and her partner Robin Windsor were chosen as the winners by three of the four judges but all four couples were praised.

"Gorgeous, gorgeous ladies. Every year I look forward to your performance, you're my favourite," gushed Dixon.

Meanwhile the cast of The Wizard of Oz raised more than £10,000 and performed a variety of songs from the hit musical.

Gok Wan slicked his hair and wore his buckle shoes as he took to the stage for a performance of Razzle Dazzle from the West End musical Chicago, and the EastEnders cast performed a medley of Queen hits in Albert Square.

Lord Sugar went into the Dragons' Den to propose the idea of an AMSbear – Pudsey – to the business brains, while JLS, Westlife and Steps were live on stage to perform their hits.

Pffft. And you lot think you're in a recession. The other week I was watching British tv with a friend and an ad came on telling us how we can all save money by insuring our sencond car at the same time as our first. We were practically spitting. "You miserable whining sods have got two cars and you're sitting out in front of St Pauls bitching about how hard done-by you are? Fucking plutocrats!"

But seriously, why so many donations? It surely can't be the quality of the entertainment. Perhaps Dave's big society's starting to kick in? Or is it that poor people give more to charity in general?

Then you both need a better grip on reality.

We both live abroad and have little idea of what anything is like in England these days, and it was partly a joke anyway.
