None of this is fair, and nor is being subject to this bullshit something that makes you "tough". It's not admirable to be so weak and powerless that you are obliged to give up your humanity according to your bosses wishes.

No one is forcing them. As I said, at £100-200k a year, I think the supply of young women willing to give up maternity is more or less endless.

It DOES apply to men. They can't be good fathers either. Unless your idea of fatherhood is a 50s sitcoms about coming in late and barely talking to your kids over the week-end...

But none of that makes declaring how tough you are to "handle" it. Surely it should be dealt with as a problem, not celebrated of evidence of your ability.

As I am sure you well know, in any tribal setting, the tendency is to associate pain with moralising virtues and the ability to sustain it with strength of character.

It's the same thing with people taking pride in the long hours they work or the stress they're under... It's gone a bit quieter these days but in the late 90s, early 00s, it was all the rage for the yuppies...
