It is thought that squid do ocmmunicate, and that it may all be very sophisticated. They have complete control over the chromataphores on their skin and can send nessages visually. They are on of the better candidates for non-human intelligence; a really big squid with a really big brain might be quite a serious thing. Its also been speculated that hypothetical life forms evolving in a gas giant atmosphere like Jupiter might be squid-like.

Yes, the colour-changing aspect occurred to me too, but I think my point still stands. If you're going to evolve speech presumably it's because you've got something complicated to say to each other - group bonding and organising hierarchies and things. All a squid basically needs to say is "hot girls come here, everyone else fuck off", which a pile of dead ichthyosaurs does rather well (I'm thinking of getting one myself).

Also, surely that deep it would be too dark for colours to be an effective means of communication?

That deep, its dark because light does not penetrate, not becuase the water gets less translucent. So light is actually very effective.

As for what they nay be saying, small squid do sometimes live in large shoals, and may hunt in packs. Don't know enough about them really.

But that would depend on them giving out light as well as changing colour. Still, it's not impossible.

Though in itself not sharing a language isn't a barrier to falling in love either, I suppose. If the girl was a serial killer or something she might find herself a kindred spirit.
