Default Do cell phones promote functional autism?

From here (emphasis added):
Pew: Your Friends Are Using Their Cell Phones to Avoid Talking to You
By Chloe Albanesius

Cell phones can be a welcome distraction, a procrastination tool, and even a lifesaver. But do they also help you avoid certain people? According to a Monday study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, many mobile owners use their mobile devices to avoid social interaction.

Of the 2,277 people polled by Pew, 13 percent said they have pretended to be on their cell phones in order to avoid interacting with people around them. Younger cell phones users are more likely to have done this; 30 percent of those 18 to 29 have ignored someone with a fake call, compared to 11 percent of those ages 30 to 49, and 6 percent of people ages 50 to 64.

When we're not ignoring people, meanwhile, many of us are conquering boredom. Forty-two percent of people have picked up their phone to stave off boredom, whether it be with a game of Angry Birds, a news app, or a few text messages. Again, younger users were most likely to turn to their phones for entertainment purposes at 70 percent, followed by 51 percent of those ages 30 to 49. [...]

Oh come on. Everyone winds up trapped by a crashing bore at some point in their life. If you've got the option of getting rid of him via a fake phonecall why not take it? There are puritans out there willing to condemn anything that might make life more pleasant.

Come on yourself. Everyone knows someone who thinks that it's more important to talk to some dude who calls them on the phone than with the people they're with:

Even if that some dude on the phone is nobody at all. This particular call went on for more than half an hour but, if it was supposed to be a hint, the guy did not take it. He just got more and more pissed off. "Are we cool, Vincent?"

No.

Yes, it's rude, but it's less rude than telling the truth. You could just shut up and listen to them, of course, but it only encourages them and you can easily waste a whole lifetime doing that.

I'm with the homeless guy I saw on TV several years ago, there is an upside to this.

Everyone used to think he was crazy whenever he talked to himself, but then he found a used cell phone that he holds up to his ear when he talks, and now nobody thinks hes crazy.
