What precisely does he mean by his statement that the EU means less democracy for the average European? Does he mean that the local politicians have less power?

It is certainly true that entering the EU would mean less democracy for the average Swiss, but this is because of our special form of direct democracy that we wouldn't be able to preserve under the umbrella of the EU. This is the primary reason why the Swiss populace doesn't want to join the EU with a substantial margin. Yet, is it generally true also for other countries? If so, this would seem like an interesting topic to debate.

He means the national parliaments would not be sovereign. But consider that the only reason he's an MEP is that he can no longer get enough suport to be an MP. That says something else about things wrong with Europe, but he's not a significant factor in UK politics.
