The nearest that the city of Sydney has come to a slum ghetto in recent years is The Block, a section of the inner-city suburb of Redfern. It is a traditional centre for Australian indigenous folk, but became infested with heroine dealing, violence and dereliction.
It is now being cleaned up and being redeveloped, with promises to provide low-income housing for many of the people who formerly lived here. An evocative symbol was this great mural evoking the Aboriginal flag, painted a couple of years ago at the end of a field where former houses had been demolished:
