Le Monde picked up the trend first, on 13 Septembre 2001:
Nous sommes tous Américains!
DANS CE MOMENT tragique où les mots paraissent si pauvres pour dire le choc que l'on ressent, la première chose qui vient à l'esprit est celle- ci : nous sommes tous Américains !
Since then, pathological risk avoidance, obsession with terror and demonisation of anything seen as anything out of "normal" have tended to paralyze English-speaking society's thoughts and maybe those in France. It even occurs here in Australia.
I was taking this photo just after New Year's Eve turned into New Year's Day:
... when a security guard rolled up and said, "You're not allowed to take photos here."
"Yes, I am," I said. "This is a public space. I can photograph what I like."
"You're not allowed to photograph people without their permission," she said.
"Yes, I am," I said, "but if I use their image for commercial purposes without having a release from them, they can sue me. Anyway, they're too far away to be identified."
"Today's technology could easily identify them. You can't take photos here."
"Nonsense. I'm taking a photo right now."
"I am gong to report you to my manager."
She walked off although I don't know how. She had no leg to stand on.
