Default Ricky Gervais to make Chinese version of The Office

Ricky Gervais to make Chinese version of The Office - Telegraph

Quote:
The comedian announced he was about to start producing a Chinese remake of the popular series in a posting on his personal blog.

But he gave no hints about how the mundane lives of David Brent, Tim and Dawn at a paper firm in Slough would be transferred to the world’s newest superpower.

The Office has already been successfully remade for the US market, with Steve Carell taking over from Gervais in the role of the misguided but likeable boss.

Foreign language versions of the mockumentary have also been produced in France (Le Bureau), Germany (Stromberg), French-speaking Canada (La Job) and Chile (La Ofis). A Hebrew version is also in the pipeline for Israeli television.

But recreating the dynamics of an English satellite town in Jiangsu or Guangdong provinces could represent Gervais’ biggest challenge yet.

He has recently finished filming An Idiot Abroad for Sky One, in which he escorted his friend and sidekick Karl Pilkington to all of the Seven Wonders of the World, including the Great Wall of China.

Gervais wrote on his blog: “I have some amazing news too. We are about to start work on developing a Chinese 'The Office'. How cool is that?

“I'm worried they will pull out when they see the first episode of An Idiot Abroad though. Oh well.”

The original British version of The Office, which was first broadcast in 2001, secured numerous awards including Best TV Comedy at the British Comedy Awards and Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.
