Default Touchdown Jesus destroyed by an act of God

I was going to link the news story, about a lightning bolt striking a 62ft tall statue of Jesus and setting it ablaze, but then I remembered this song which is just better.

Or as one guy on a youtube video showing it burn said; Zeus 1 God 0.

Heres the Big Butter Jesus song.

When did that happen? He faces the expressway, and I just drove by there Monday, and I didn't notice. Of course, I'm used to that statue and wasn't paying any attention....

The Melbourne Herald-Sun can help you, Benjamin:
Jesus statue in Ohio struck by lightning

AP From: AP June 15, 2010 11:32PM

A SIX-storey-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm on Monday night and burned to the ground, police said.

The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The sculpture, nearly 19 metres tall and 12 metres wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signalling a touchdown in a game of football.

It was made of plastic foam and fibreglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained early on Tuesday. The fire spread from the statue to an adjacent amphitheatre, but was confined to the attic area, and no one was injured, police Chief Mark Neu said.

Travellers on Interstate 75 often were startled to come upon the huge statue by the roadside, but many said America needs more symbols like it. So many people stopped at the church campus that church officials had to build a walkway to accommodate them.

The 4000-member, nondenominational church was founded by former horse trader Lawrence Bishop and his wife. Bishop said in 2004 he was trying to help people, not impress them, with the statue. He said his wife proposed the Jesus figure as a beacon of hope and salvation and they spent about $US250,000 to finance it.
It's a miracle.

Cost of big Jesus statue: $250000
Average cost of child vaccination schedule in a third world country: $25

Just saying, like.

My morning paper had the story too. Happened Monday night, I was by there Monday morning. So you scooped the Dayton Daily News. I'm at least glad to know I wasn't so tunnel-visioned or wrapped-up in my own thoughts as to miss a big burned-up statue.

Former 'horse trader' Lawrence Bishop? THAT is news to me. I surmise he is the fellow behind the giant 'Trader's World' flea market adjacent to the church campus. It has a statue too--a red, anatomically-correct, rearing stallion. Several of them, in fact--on top of the signs and other places, used as the outfit's trademark. None nearly as big as the Jesus used to be, though.

I can only say that SW Ohio now sucks a bit less with the demise of this particular bit of public art. I offer thanks.

Maybe we can get something like the World's Largest Ball of String from whoever has it (there are several claimants).
