Some of them could be quite explicit. In SA all pornography was banned; there was one highly scandalous magazine which showed topless women with stars over their nipples, and that was it. As a result these "romance" novels circulated quite widely in the high schools, and tended to fall open to certain well-thumbed passages. In that context it did'nt matter who the protagonists were; whole generations learned everything they new about sex before they were married, both male and female, from this sort of source. It was often known that the 'action' began on 'page 84' - what the characters had to say in the rest of the work didn't come into it.
