Well I don't read romance novels/chick-lit, but I've frequently heard people who do bitching about the inane/embarrassing covers ("Oh God, not more disembodied legs..."), and saying that they cover them up with home-made dust-jackets.
On the other hand, people who read novels by Andy McNab don't seem to be bothered by the clichés on the covers... But apparently grown-ups who read kids books are, given the market for adult editions of Harry Potter etc. where only the cover is changed.
