Probably because several past generations of comic book readers have grown up, but aren't going to be entertained by simplistic childlike heroes. Its no surprise there are more jaded, flawed anti-heroes running around. Its just a reflection of their audience.

That's another aspect. Comic books were for kids in the 50s and 60s; now adults read them, too.
